    Soccer Development Goals by Age

Age-aware soccer development goals for youth players, from technical foundations to game understanding, physical context, mindset, and pathway planning.

A development goal should meet a player where they are — not where a chart says they ought to be.

The right goal is specific enough to practice, age-appropriate enough to be safe, and meaningful enough that the player wants to own it.

Ages 6–9: Build a Relationship With the Ball

At this stage, development is about joy, movement, coordination, and comfort with the ball. Do not turn a young player’s plan into an early scouting report. Let them explore different positions and sports, and make the goal easy to understand.

    Useful process goals

    • Use both feet during a short ball-mastery game.
    • Receive the ball and move into open space.
    • Try a new movement or change of direction without fear of mistakes.
    • Finish practice able to describe one fun thing they learned.

Ages 10–12: Connect Technique to Decisions

Players can begin linking a clean touch or pass to what is happening around them. Training should still be playful and varied, but the plan can now ask questions such as: Did I scan before receiving? Did my first touch help my next action? Did I choose a safe or brave option for a reason?

A good goal might be “check both shoulders before receiving in the next small-sided game,” not “be the best player on the team.” The first goal is observable and belongs to the player.

Ages 13–15: Transfer Work Into the Match

As competition and tactical demands increase, individual work should connect to match situations. Goals can include positioning, transition reactions, playing through pressure, role responsibilities, and the ability to review a decision without spiraling after a mistake.

    Technical

Receive on the half-turn and play forward when the space is available.

    Tactical

Create a useful support angle before the ball arrives.

    Physical

Build age-appropriate movement quality and repeat actions with recovery in mind.

    Mental

Use a reset routine after an error and return attention to the next action.

Ages 16–18: Add Ownership and Direction

Older players can take more responsibility for setting a priority, reviewing film, and connecting training to the role or pathway they want to pursue. That does not mean every goal should be recruiting-related. A player may want to improve for a college opportunity, make a starting lineup, enjoy competition more, or become a better teammate.

Strong goals at this stage remain grounded in behaviors: recognize when to break a line, defend the space behind a teammate, communicate earlier, or execute a technical action at game speed. A pathway is useful context, not a guarantee.

How to Write an Age-Appropriate Goal

    1. Start with the player’s words: What do they want to do or feel more ready for?
    2. Choose one behavior: Make it something the player can practice or notice.
    3. Add a time window: Use a training cycle or review date, not an unrealistic promise.
    4. Choose evidence: Drill result, film moment, coach observation, or reflection — whichever actually fits.
    5. Review without comparison: Ask whether this player moved toward their goal, not whether they matched another player’s timeline.
