Speed is not one thing. A player can be an explosive accelerator who never reaches elite top speed. Or a player with exceptional top speed who takes 20 meters to reach it — losing every short race in the process. Understanding which quality you need, and how to develop each, is the difference between targeted improvement and aimless speed work.
The Definitions
Acceleration
0 → Maximum velocity
The rate at which you increase speed from a standstill or slow movement. Measured in the first 10–20m. Determined by: starting mechanics, leg drive force, rate of force development, and explosive strength.
Top Speed
Maximum velocity achieved
The fastest speed you can sustain, typically reached at 30–60m depending on the athlete. Determined by: stride frequency, stride length, ground contact time, and maximum velocity mechanics.
What Each Position Actually Needs

Training Each Quality
Acceleration Training
Best tools: Resisted sprints (10–15% bodyweight), falling starts, short sprints from varied positions (5–20m), hip extension strength work (trap-bar deadlift, split squat)
Key principle: Full recovery between reps. 90 seconds minimum. Never sprint for acceleration when fatigued.
Volume: 6–10 reps per session, 2 sessions per week in an off-season block.
Top Speed Training
Best tools: Flying sprints (build up 20m, max effort for 20m), wicket runs (stride length regulation at max velocity), unresisted 40–60m sprints with full walk-back rest
Key principle: You can only train top speed when you've actually reached it — which requires full acceleration run-up. Short sprints don't develop maximum velocity.
Volume: 4–6 flying sprint reps per session, 1–2 sessions per week. Longer rest (3–4 min between reps).
The Relationship Between Them
Top speed sets the ceiling for acceleration. A player who can reach 25 mph can accelerate toward that ceiling. A player who can only reach 18 mph is accelerating toward a lower peak — regardless of how good their acceleration mechanics are.
This means improving top speed mechanics (stride frequency, ground contact time, maximum velocity form) indirectly helps acceleration too. The fastest path: train acceleration first (more directly game-relevant), then extend into top speed work once the acceleration foundation is strong.
