Two players with identical physical capacity can run very different 40-yard dash times based purely on mechanics. One pushes force in the right direction with minimal waste. The other works equally hard but loses significant speed to poor technique. Youth soccer coaches rarely address this — and youth players rarely think about it. They just run.
The result is that most youth soccer players are running substantially slower than their body would allow if their mechanics were correct. This isn't a fitness problem. It's a movement-quality problem — and it's more fixable, and more quickly, than fitness limitations.
The Two Phases That Matter Most
Drive Phase (0–15m)
- • Forward lean of 45° from the ground
- • Each stride pushes directly backward
- • Short strides, high force per stride
- • Arms drive forward and back aggressively
- • Eyes forward, not down
Maximum Velocity Phase (25m+)
- • Body fully upright
- • High knee lift — thigh parallel to ground
- • Foot strikes directly under the hip
- • Minimal ground contact time
- • Upper body relaxed — no clenching
Five Common Errors and Their Fixes
Premature uprighting
Rising from the forward lean too soon during acceleration
Speed Cost
Redirects force upward instead of backward — kills acceleration in the first 10m
Fix
Falling starts, wall drive holds
Over-striding
Reaching the foot out in front of the body on each stride
Speed Cost
Creates a braking force with every step — like running with your foot hitting a speed bump
Fix
A-skips, wicket runs at controlled stride length
Heel striking
Landing on the heel rather than the ball of the foot
Speed Cost
Dramatically increases ground contact time, reduces stride efficiency, increases injury risk
Fix
High knees drills, B-skips, conscious ball-of-foot landing cues
Arm crossing
Arms swinging across the body's centerline
Speed Cost
Creates rotational force that the core must resist — wastes energy and slows stride frequency
Fix
'Hands past your pockets' cue, arms-only sprint drills
Tight shoulders / clenched jaw
Tension in the upper body during sprinting
Speed Cost
Tension travels down — tight shoulders lead to tight hips, which reduce stride length and frequency
Fix
'Shake hands' relaxation cue, conscious jaw release drill during build-ups

Run this before every sprint session. Over time it becomes the corrective tool itself:
Mechanics work pays off faster than any other speed intervention because it's neural — you're reprogramming a movement pattern, not building muscle. Players who commit to this for 4 weeks consistently improve their sprint times without getting physically fitter. The speed was always there. The mechanics just needed to let it out.
