Ask most youth soccer coaches how to make a player faster and you'll hear: more running. Extra fitness sessions. End-of-training sprints. Beep tests. The reasoning is intuitive — if you run more, you get fitter, and fitter means faster.
This is wrong. Running more makes you better at running at moderate intensity for a long time. It does not make you faster. Speed — the ability to cover 10 or 20 meters faster than the player next to you — comes from an entirely different set of adaptations. Here are the five things that actually move the needle.
Fix Your Mechanics First
Sprint mechanics is the fastest route to speed improvement. Most youth players have identifiable errors — premature uprighting, heel striking, over-striding, arm crossing — that they've never been coached out of. One mechanics fix can be worth 3 months of conditioning.

Film yourself sprinting from the side. Watch for the errors.
Train Sprints, Not Just Fitness
Conditioning builds aerobic capacity and fatigue tolerance. Sprint training — short, maximum-effort runs with full recovery — builds the fast-twitch neural patterns that make you faster. These are different adaptations and require different training. You can't condition your way to speed.
Action
Two dedicated sprint sessions per week in the off-season.
Develop Explosive Strength
Acceleration is limited by how much force your legs can produce against the ground in a fraction of a second. Trap-bar deadlifts, Bulgarian split squats, and plyometric jumps develop this capacity. Speed without a strength foundation has a ceiling.
Action
Two gym sessions per week: hip hinge, single-leg strength, plyometrics.
Use Resisted and Contrast Training
Resisted sprints (sled, band, or hill) force better mechanics and higher force output. Contrast sprints — heavy resistance immediately followed by unresisted sprints — produce the sharpest short-term speed gains. Both should be in any serious speed program.
Action
Add 6–8 resisted reps followed by 4 contrast sprints per session.
Prioritize Recovery
Speed adaptations happen during recovery, not training. A player who trains speed twice a week but sleeps well and manages fatigue will outperform a player who trains four times but is chronically undertottered. Sprint quality matters more than sprint volume.
Action
48h minimum between speed sessions. Sleep 8–9h during training blocks.

Speed development is a skill, not just a fitness quality. It responds to deliberate, specific practice — the same way finishing technique or first touch does. Players who approach it that way, consistently, for a full off-season, arrive at pre-season noticeably faster. It's one of the most reliable transformations in youth soccer development.
